POP MailboxesIn addition to mail forwarding options, email can be retrieved from POP mailboxes using a program like Eudora. You have access to one master POP account and 5* (or more) additional POPs that appear in your Control Panel within Email Settings. PPP internet access is required to read or send email. You will need to use your local ISP's SMTP server address to send mail. If you can use a special mail program like Eudora you might be able to specify a different return address. ** Important ** The Master POP AccountBy default, all email addressed to your domain is forwarded to the default mail forwarding address listed within Email Settings under your Control Panel. As such, e-mail addressed to anyone@yourdomain.com will be forwarded to your "real" e-mail address. An alternative to having mail forwarded is to retrieve mail from POP mailboxes. To recap, the master POP account is merely an alternative to the default mail forwarding address. If you remove the default mail forwarding address, all e-mail that was normally forwarded to that address will be held in the master POP account. The five additional POP accounts within Email Settings allow for more privacy in retrieving e-mail to specific addresses. To retrieve email from the master POP account, you must first remove the default mail forwarding address in Email Settings under your Control Panel. By removing the default mail forwarding address, all mail addressed to your domain can be retrieved from the master POP account rather than being forwarded. The additional POP accounts are for specific aliases which require their own private mail box. Use the following settings to configure your mail program to access the master POP account: POP Account: <userid>@yourdomainname.com Substitute your account userid above. Your master POP account password will be the same as your web account password.
Please be advised that the master pop account will reside under your /u/web/userid/stats/mail/ directory as a text file just like the other additional POP accounts that come with your website. Please do not name one of the additional pop accounts same as your userid name. Please keep in mind that all POP boxes do count against your disk space.
Configurable POP AccountsYou can also choose to set up POP Accounts only for specific e-mail addresses. For example, email addressed to sales@yourdomain.com could be held in a private POP mailbox and be accessed with a unique id and password. Locate the "POP Accounts" section in Email Settings. To create a new POP account, enter the username of the new POP account. For example, if you want e-mail addressed to webmaster@yourdomain.com to be held in a POP account, enter the username "webmaster" in the column titled, "@yourdomain". Be sure to enter a unique id and password for each new POP account as illustrated below.
SMTP E-mail ServiceWe are proud to be one of only a few major hosting providers that can offer outgoing SMTP e-mail service for our UNIX web hosting accounts. This allows you to send outgoing e-mail from our mail servers referenced with your own domain name. Although you can easily specify your own domain name within your mail program, many ISP's require you to send e-mail messages with the "From:" address showing "your_userID@your_ISP.net". This helps to prevent unauthorized "spammers" to use their mail servers. However, this looks unprofessional, especially when you are responding to e-mail sent to your domain. We give you the ability to send e-mail with the "From:" address showing "your_name@your_domain.com". In order to use this feature, you will need to configure your e-mail program to use our mail server referenced with your domain name. In your e-mail program's configuration options, specify "smtp.your_domain.com" instead of the SMTP address given to you by your ISP. Also specify "your_name@your_domain.com" as your "return address" or "reply-to address" in place of the e-mail address given to you by your ISP. In order to prevent unauthorized users from using our mail servers to send their "spam", we have set up a method that allows only authorized customers to send e-mail through our mail servers. Before sending outgoing e-mail, you must validate yourself by checking e-mail from one of the POP accounts under the domain from which you wish to send e-mail. This is the key to our spam protection software. Checking your POP account with your userID and password activates our SMTP server, which gives you a 30 minute window during which you can send your outgoing mail. If you do not have a POP account, you will need to set up a POP account for your domain. If you wish, you can just set up a dummy POP account at your domain that has no purpose other than allowing you to activate the SMTP server. Please note, you will not be allowed to send bulk e-mail through our SMTP server.
Mail ForwardingBy default, ALL mail is set up to automatically forward to the email address that was provided when your account was set up. This email address is called the "default" mail forwarding address. This address can be changed in Email Settings within your Control Panel. By default, you do not need to set specific forwarding options for specific addresses associated with your domain name. (e.g. webmaster@yourname.com, sales@yourname.com, etc.) as long as you want any and all email addressed to your domain name to go to your default email address. You can also set up to 10* specific mail forwarding options for email addresses which are to forward to an address other than the default. You can easily do this from your account Control Panel. The 10 rows are reserved for specific mail forwarding options. For example, if your default forwarding address is at AOL, but you want sales@yourdomain.com to forward to an address at Compuserve, your mail forwarding options would look like so: |
